As someone who suffers from food allergies and dietary restrictions going out for ice cream on a hot summer day is not as fun as it is for others. I have to be very cautious and even then it’s risky. For those of you who have the same restrictions, I’m sure you can relate.
As a child, I learned to be my own advocate from just five years old, reading food labels with the same intensity as millennials reading the instructions for a bookcase from IKEA. And after reading the labels, I realized very early on that the old adage “better safe than sorry” applies directly. However, the diligent behavior is not the challenge. The tricky part about having food allergies is not just the health risk with subsequent fear and anxiety. it’s the isolation, the “otherness” that can be difficult, especially for children. And kudos to all of you amazing parents that are raising children with allergies. You’re doing great! I know the stress and additional worry can feel daunting, but you ARE doing a wonderful job!
I can remember back when I was just a kid and not being invited to birthday parties as parents thought it would be easier to just keep me away than have precautions in place. I managed to advance throughout grade school without the peanut and nut free tables at school lunch time. In the 80’s it just was not as pervasive as it is today. There are times that I was invited to go out to dinner with my friend and their parents and felt deep concern over what I could eat on the menu if anything at all.
As summer came and went, I was reminded of those feelings I experienced as a child. The simple act of going out to get an ice cream was not as simple for those with allergies. Although, I can’t really complain, my parents and loved ones made me all kinds of delectable treats without any allergens. They made me feel very special and included, but I do know that it is a challenge.
This summer, I found a place that made me feel like a little kid with the same amount of joy and excitement. Chill on the Hill in Chestnut Hill, PA is a delightful frozen yogurt shop that offers mostly all nut free and gluten free options (clearly labeled on each machine) also there are dairy free options for those with a dairy intolerance. The yogurt is stored in sterile vats with individual handles instead of being scooped out individually. Those of us with allergies know that if that’s the case we have to request a new spoon each time, but then who knows if the ice cream in the container has been contaminated?! All of the toppings at Chill on the Hill are located off to the side and behind glass. However, I would recommend avoiding since there is an opportunity for cross contamination. Honestly, you do not need the toppings at all. The yogurt is creamy, flavorful, and delicious!
Even though summer is over, you can still enjoy the shop and try the scrumptious seasonal flavors like pumpkin and cheesecake. Next time you want to go out with the family or friends for dessert, try Chill on the Hill and enjoy the entire social experience of going out, visiting with loved ones and enjoying a tasty treat.
