Warm spices like cinnamon pair perfectly with chocolate. Many chocolate cake recipes call for hot coffee just like one of our favorites by the incredible Ina Garten. However, it is another spice that we think pairs even better…ground cloves. The spicy, fragrant ingredient gives the chocolate an unexpected depth of flavor, not to mention something a bit less commonly used.
Pancakes are a fun, sometimes decadent, but always delicious breakfast, brunch or let’s face it, dinner option. If you feel the same way then you must try our chocolate and clove gluten free, vegan pancakes recipe!
Ingredients:
2/3 cups of Gluten-Free Pancake Mix by King Arthur
1/2 to 3/4 cups of Flax Milk by Good Karma
2 tablespoons cocoa powder by Navitas Organics
1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves by McCormick
Zest of one small orange
1 teaspoon of vegan butter by Earth Balance
How to:
You will only need one bowl for all the ingredients. Begin by spreading the butter on a pan or skillet with heat on low. In a mixing bowl add all ingredients and stir. Grate the orange and add the zest, careful not to include the pith into bowl. Stir ingredients together. With a tablespoon add the batter onto the pan. This recipe should make four large, fluffy pancakes. You could also add more flax milk to make a thinner batch.
Once the pancakes are spooned onto the pan, wait for them to bubble before flipping. It is important to wait for the bubbles as the cocoa powder color can make the batter appear cooked.
When the pancakes have cooked for a couple of minutes on the other side and are nice and golden around the edges, remove from the heat and plate. Drizzle maple syrup, agave, or brown rice syrup. Enjoy!
