Here are 9 ways to enjoy the holidays during a pandemic.
1.) Forget the baking! Step away from the flour. Over the past seven or so months our kitchens have produced far too many loaves of banana bread. We have evolved to candy making. If you have children at home- forget the piping hot sugar and thermometers. Fudge is the answer. Easy, delicious, and versatile.
Vegan Fudge Recipe:
1 bag of your favorite dark chocolate- we recommend Enjoy Life for those with allergens.
1 can of coconut milk
zest of one orange
Melt the chocolate in a glass bowl in the microwave or on the stove using a double boiler. Stir in the coconut milk. Add the zest of one orange. Pour into a parchment lined 9 x 13 pan and place in refrigerator. Next day remove and cut into squares. Of course don’t forget to lick the spoon while you are making it!
2.) Embrace snail mail and these days it really is that slow. Find eco-friendly stationary or make your own using recycled paper. Write letters to loved ones to stay connected. Write letters to those who need a boost like first responders and healthcare workers. Say hello, say thank you, say thinking of you… All are appreciated during these lonely times.
3.) Blast that music! Listening to music is an excellent way to relax. It is a proven stress reliever and we all need a little of that nowadays. Make a holiday playlist and keep it on as background music while you work or just need some downtime.
4.) Drive around to see the lights. Chances are people will still decorate the outside of their homes this holiday season. Get in the car with a plate of fudge and blanket and drive around. Christmas lights are beautiful and the warm colors can actually offer a mental boost.
5.) In that vein, decorate your own home. Make it cozy and fun. If you have any minor repairs, take this time to fix them. If you want a blanket fort in one room- do it. Maybe you want a Christmas house, Mariah Carey style- do it! We could be inside for quite sometime and your home should feel comfortable.
6.) Games are still a excellent form of entertainment. Puzzles, board games, trivia and now holiday themed games. Make up your own or try something new.
7.) Go on a nature walk. Nature is calming and good for your health. Make it a challenge and game by trying to identify the trees that you come across. Here’s how.
8.) Crack open your favorite book. This time of year, try a classic like A Christmas Carol. Read aloud, act out the parts, or have a zoom call and each take a character to read.
9.) This one is not ideal, but it may come down to this. A virtual meal with loved ones is the second best option of spending time together. Maybe you try a new holiday recipe. Sit down and enjoy a meal with the computer at the place setting for the special someone.
Remember to keep the faith, hope and know that this too shall pass.
