“Inspired by the ocean, made on Main Street. Since 2015, dedicated to putting people, planet and purpose first.”
This is the messaging that initially drew me to ocean + main, a stunning, sustainable and women led fashion brand that specializes in caftans and tunics. Not just any caftans, but caftans created with the highest respect for the environment and mindful of additional waste and pollutants. The brand offers symbols on each garment to shed light on the conscious way the product was produced. Learn more here. Each caftan or tunic is sourced from overcut fabrics from the world’s finest mills. These fabrics would be headed to the nearest landfill if not given a second life by ocean + main.
Here is what Founder, Mary Price had to say:
1) What changes would you like to see from the fashion industry in terms of sustainability? Do you see any resistance from consumers and if so what are some solutions?
After years in the sustainable fashion space, I am thrilled that sustainability has quickly become THE conversation. There are so many great brands taking it seriously now. I think education is the biggest hurdle. Once people become aware of the environmental impact of fashion, resistance is minimal and people realize sustainability just makes common sense. More importantly, when sustainable options are beautiful, easily available, and fit their needs, people love being part of the solution.
The second step in education is separating truth from fiction. There is a lot of “greenwashing” out there so customers should look for certifications to ensure that each company’s claims are verified. The HIGG Index, GOTS Certification, Blue Sign, Positive Luxury, ReMake are just a few of which to look.
2) I absolutely love your commitment to caftans! Tell us a little about the ocean + main woman.
The ocean+main woman is comfortable with who she is and appreciates luxury – at first, sustainability was a bonus, now she only buys with purpose. I chose caftans for several reasons. They are seasonless, elegant, timeless and classic and have been a part of every culture and every climate since the fig leaf. They work on everybody, at every time no matter your size, age, lifestyle or gender.
3) As a woman entrepreneur and business owner, could you please provide any advice for other women interested in starting their own company?
Start where you are with what you have. There is no perfect time, perfect plan or perfect idea at first. It will evolve with time and you never know where your idea will take you!
For me, it was difficult to purchase just one, but as a vegan I was ecstatic to discover the cupro fabric options. Cupro is a cruelty free silk alternative. It is a by- product of the cotton industry and is made from part of the cotton stem that is typically discarded during the cotton production.
The orange caftan was a no brainer. Did you know that the color psychology of orange produces feelings of excitement, high energy, enthusiasm, and warmth?! A color that I love all year round, but especially during this challenging and sad time of the pandemic. I styled this radiant, luxurious and eco-friendly caftan on Easter Sunday with gold accents and vibrant makeup.
The feel of the caftan against the skin is absolutely sumptuous, soft, comfortable, and silky. The draping is flattering and moves gracefully with the body. If you have not already, try ocean + main and please leave a comment to share your experience!
