Over the summer, we included a post featuring sustainable fashion brands for the individual interested in finding eco-friendly alternatives to their current wardrobe pieces. This fall we are tackling shoe brands with a mission- to utilize vegan materials that are also sustainable- something that does not always go hand in hand.
Beyond Skin, founded over 15 years ago has been striving to not only create vintage inspired and stylish footwear, but designed with sustainability in mind. Each shoe is handcrafted in Spain under strict ethical standards and produced using the finest cruelty free textiles and fabrics. The AW 19 collection is now available featuring mules, loafers, booties and boots all in styles that are sure to impress. However, my fall recommendation is a pair of burgundy lace ups with a rich velvet bow. A comfortable and supportive shoe with a 90’s inspired twist. Matt and Nat offer a beautiful selection of shoes, small accessories, bags, and clothing completely made from cruelty free materials. With the planet and animals in mind, Matt and Nat are dedicated to using recycled materials (nylons, cork and rubber) including linings made from plastic bottles for over 10 years! Their complete and transparent ethical standards and innovation can be found on their website- we encourage you to read their inspiring brand story here. As for fall fashion, how could you go wrong with a pair of boots, especially ones with a comfortable rubber sole and trendy platform?!
Stella McCartney is certainly the most expensive of the three brands we included in this post. However, her design and innovation are factors to be considered when debating on whether or not to invest the money. As a luxury fashion brand, Stella McCartney creates pieces that are just as visually arresting as similar fashion items made from animal byproducts. The signature Stella McCartney vegetarian leather could fool even the most avid leather admirer, unlike any common PU design. Recycled polyester, organic cotton and metals are woven into the fabric of the cutting edge creations. If you are a savvy and thrifty shopper that believes in upcycling then keep an eye out for Stella pieces and other designers at consignment shops including Greene Street, filled with treasures including this pair of platform signature sneakers.
Take your time and do your research when searching for sustainable pieces. Brands are readily accessible unlike years before. Keep your eyes out for fabulous finds at thrift and consignment shops to extend the life cycle of fashion and accessory items. Please feel free to leave a comment and share your favorite eco- friendly brand.
