Traveling through Italy as a vegan far exceeded my expectations. Prior to leaving the states for the Eco Travel Guide of Deliberately Considerate, I was understandably worried about my food options. Having studied abroad in Florence and travelled throughout Italy in the past, I had an outdated memory of the food selection. I assumed that a vegetarian meal would be easier than a vegan meal and both would be easier that gluten free or any other dietary restrictions. Thankfully, I was wrong and during my travels here and abroad I was never without delicious choices. From fresh markets to MICHELIN restaurants.
One in particular stands out for me. Joia is located in Milan, Italy and serves both visually stunning veggie cuisine as well as delicious. The food is fresh, seasonal, and organic. The mission of the Joia kitchen is to be respectful of the earth and infuse the connection between food and nature in every plate prepared. Colors and shapes are utilized as well as experimentation of advanced culinary techniques, which create a truly unique dining experience.
Joia is immaculately clean, uncluttered, yet warm with touches of nature as the decor including a geode for a non traditional tablecloth holder. Clear aqua glass plates, invoke the feeling of water and sea glass. Natural wood and lighting create a serene and relaxing atmosphere. For those interested in sampling a variety, try the “square dish” complete with four small plates and a dessert. Be sure to discuss your dietary needs with the gracious and friendly servers. Substitutes are available and welcomed. Every single plate was thoughtfully created, beautifully presented, and mouth watering; especially the vegan and gluten free dessert made to order for me consisting of decadent orange mouse over shortbread!
Next time you are traveling to Milan, make a reservation at Joia for a truly unforgettable experience! Stay tuned for the Fall 2019 Eco Travel Guide of Deliberately Considerate for exciting tips.
